Are others having ‘fun’ with your landings: at your expense?

Are others having more ‘fun’ with your landings than you are? At your expense, figuratively and literally! Are you frustrated, trying to get the ‘hang’ of it?

None of your landing issues are new and they are certainly NOT your fault; the problem is that the world of aviation has been recycling the same ideas about landing training for 100 years, without really offering anything more than trial and error and repetition, ‘explained’ badly through cliches and bad jokes. We just get the ‘hang’ of it; and then we have to get the hang of it again and again and again, perhaps through an entire career. One of my earlier B727 captains described one of my landings – back in 1977 (pre- Jacobson Flare, I might add) – as “like an older person trying to be graceful, but ultimately losing control and dropping clumsily, int0 a bath!” That hurt!

‘Circuits and bumps’? Since the end of World War One, flight instructors have made little attempt to do better than telling students what they, themselves, do; and each one has their way of relating the story; and that’s why you have had a different story from every instructor. There has been no comprehensive landing system – until 1987.

We all know WHAT we are trying to achieve; it’s the HOW that has been so elusive.

Until 1987, there had never been a universal, quantifiable and consistently reliable approach and landing training technique. In order to land any airplane consistently well, we must know the answers to five important, yet simple, questions:

1. Where to aim?
2. How to aim?
3. When to flare?
4. How much to flare?
5. How fast to flare? (i.e., the flare rate?)

Let me ask: ‘Have you ever seen a book or article, or heard an instructor explain, factually (without mumbo jumbo or smoke and mirrors), the answer to even ONE of these questions? No?

Neither had I, from 1965 as a 17-yo student pilot until 1985, when I questioned conventional wisdom and dared to challenge the status quo. It was worth the effort and the resistance; because now the Jacobson Flare app answers each of those 5 questions – and many more – in fact EVERY question you’ve ever had, regarding landings.

‘New pilots, pilots transitioning and those of us with experience ‘on type’ will all benefit from this.’ Tom Turner – American Bonanza Society

‘New pilots, pilots transitioning and those of us with experience ‘on type’ will all benefit from this.’

“If you have trouble visualizing your aim point or the timing and execution of your flare, and your instructor (or another instructor) isn’t successful in guiding you to that enlightenment, consider the following resource:

  • David Jacobson’s ‘The Jacobson Flare’, a fee-based iPad app. I met Captain Jacobson (a retired Qantas Airways pilot and training captain) last week at the Australian Bonanza Society’s BPPP, Narromine NSW, and before that took his very informative and high-quality app-based course (Disclosure: He gave me free access so I could see his presentation before we met). New pilots, pilots transitioning from one type of airplane to another, and those of us with experience “in type” will all benefit from this.   Tom Turner – American Bonanza Society

See www.jacobsonflare.com/

 A good landing comes from a good approach. Technique for making a good approach changes from one pilot to the next, and may even vary from one landing to the next for the same pilot. Regardless, another landing best practice is to make the final portion of your approach stabilized. This means being:
  • In configuration (flaps set for landing; retractable landing gear extended);
  • In alignment with the runway centerline, compensating for crosswind, …by the time you pass through 500 feet above the runway on final approach and continually thereafter, until beginning your flare;
  • On glidepath (aim point steady in the correct position in your windscreen) and;
  • On speed (recommended or computed landing speed for airplane weight, flap position and gust conditions).

If you do not meet all four criteria consistently for the last 500 feet of your descent, or if at any time in the last 500 feet your aim point indicates you’ll overshoot your aim point (and therefore your planned touchdown point), then GO AROUND – power up, pitch up, clean up and climb away…and set it up correctly next time.”

David,

I took the time over the week end to have a good look at your app and I was completely blown away by the very professional way in which you have approached it and the excellent content. I have heard people mention the flare often over the years and I must admit I have never really taken the time to have a good look at it. You have certainly put a great deal of effort into the project and I’m sure it will be of immense benefit to pilots of all experience levels. The points you have made are valid and the industry is well overdue for such a breath of fresh air! I really enjoyed working through the app and I also took the time to take my Piper Pacer for a few circuits to try it out. I must admit I was impressed at just how seamlessly it fits into the approach and landing. The little Pacer can be a bit of a challenge when it comes to landing as it has become known as a tail-wheel with attitude. However, your techniques fit comfortably into the planning of the approach and landing. Thank you very much for the opportunity to appreciate and apply your excellent technique.

All the best with your venture,

Cheers

Bob
